Coursework- Editing (Part 5)

Today, I sat down and edited my coursework at it's final stage. Adding the credits and adding final sound effects.

The first credited actor, the famous David Harrison. Note: Most professional films don't have "starring" on it so I did not put it in. In addition, I used the pen tool to make the credits appear and disappear.

The second credited actor. I couldn't come up with a good name so I went on a name generator and found this. Note: I am using the old version of premier pro to edit this movie.

The third credited actor, an actual person who worked with me for the project. Sunsun portrays the killer doctor in this film opening. 

The forth credited actor, Cole Phelps, another creative name thought up to fill in the credits. Note: Weapons used in the film were not real, they are airsoft rifles and were un-loaded when shooting the film.

The fifth credited actor, who worked alongside me wit this project. Kelly portrays the second detective (The one with the sand colored plate carrier.) (I portray the first detective who has a black tactical vest on.)

Alright, now the credits are over, let's talk about Fonts. Originally I was going to use "Strangers In The Night Font" (Note: I did not put the song in.) The font looks like this:

However, when I tested it out I found that the font didn't really match the overall theme of the movie intro. I searched deeper onto the internet, more pages of fonts appeared on www.dafont.com which has a wide selection for different fronts. I was scrolling through when a font called "The Bad Times" caught me eye. There was something unique about the font, something oddly satisfying. When I tested it out, I found out that the font was perfect for the credits. I decided that the font matched the movie name aka Incision. The edges were different from stranger in the night, and looked sharper, like broken scissors or a scalpel. TBT font looks like this:

Enough about fonts, let's talk about sound effects. There are different sound effects I used in the film, such as police sirens or gun shot sounds. However there was on particular sound effect that was hard to come by, a "WHOOSH" sound for when the CCTV footage from the phone pops onto the screen.  There are so many WHOOSHES out there it was really hard to find a good one, however I settled with a free sound effect I found online. It was a typically WHOOSH, but lowered pitch that would match the film intro. (Note: Most of the sound in the film was captured by the camera during the process of filming)

For the muzzle flash at the end, I used a website called footage.productioncrate.com which provided me with royalty free, pre-keyed effects. The end result was brilliant.

Coursework -Editing (part 4)

Today, I sat down and did some editing during my silent study period. Since one of the scenes would feature a security camera, I took a while to find a perfect template for a CCTV Camera. Since this is a body-dump for the killer, the conditions would be pretty bad, hence why the CCTV camera's footage is a bit grainy and fuzzy. I downloaded a pre-made CCTV template, there was 2 versions available, a pre-key version and a green screen version. I messed around and found out that I could only use the pre-keyed version.

The grainy camera makes it hard to see what the detectives find, but it can only be presumed from their reactions, it is something nasty.

The detectives rush out the room that is laced with explosives.

With a lot of help from my media teacher, he showed me how to make this effect. By taking one section of a scene, and putting it in the phone to make it look like the mad doctor is watching detectives. Thanks Mr.H!

Coursework -Editing (part 3)

Today I sat down for quite a while and edited my film. I finished the section of the detectives coming in, and the killer's scene, along with the sound effects.

Today, after putting the sound effects into the movie, I've realized some of the effects are too loud in some scenes. I couldn't quite find how to adjust the volume until I asked my Media Teacher who showed me the way. After that, I successfully managed to adjust the volume of the sound effects, to tone down those that are too loud and tone up those that are too quiet. To do this you have to click on the sound effect, then click the box called "effect controls". After doing this there would be a tab called volumes, simply press it and adjust the level to your liking. The digits with the minus makes the sound become more quiet while the digits without the minus is becoming louder.

In this scene, I've added a couple of sound effects in to suit the action. Since this is the POV shot of the victim looking at the killer, the words muttered by an injured person can be heard saying "no no" like he's begging for his life. Secondly, I've added police sirens as the killer shoots the victim, to add more depth to the story. I was re-playing the last of us a couple of days back and found that one of the sirens from the police cars would match this scene so I found a copyright free one and placed it in. Finally, I was searching for a perfect gunshot sound until it came across my mind that the sound needs to be loud and in an en-closed space, which narrowed my search until I found the perfect one.

As the detective rushes out the room due to hearing the bomb, I've decided to put a bomb alarm in, a noise that would be quite high pitched to grab the audience's attention. Hopefully no-one notices the last detective (me) who rushes out the room, ramming the curtain and making it fall accidentally.

Other than the sound effects, I also did a "fade in" and "fade out" effect on the titles, you can accomplish this by using the pen tool to select which parts you want to drag up or down, which creates the fading effect.

Shape Theory-Dexter

Dexter Opening Credits: Shape Theory

Connotation: Cutting Human Flesh
Denotation:  Cutting meat for his breakfast.

Connotation: Ripped human flesh.
Denotation: Insides of a grapefruit.
-The texture/shape of the fruit's flesh has a slight resemblance to flesh on a ripped arm or wound.

Connotation: Dexter has blood on him/on his hands, symbolizing that he spilled blood and has murdered someone in cold blood.

Denotation: Dead Mosquito.

Connotation: Stabbing an eyeball. (Shape of fried egg resembles an eye ball)

Denotation: Cutting up a fried egg.

Coursework- Rough Cut

The rough cut, even though I put down most of the sound effects and credits in, it was lacking some special effects and sound effects in some scenes.

For example, in the rough cut, I did not use the warp stabilizer to stabilize some shots that were shaky. Furthermore, I did not put any CCTV Template, or made the footage from the phone transverse/pop up into the screen. I will also put a muzzle flash at the end of the intro scene where the doctor shoots his victim in the head.

In the final version of this film, I've completed all I have said above while this one is only a rough cut.

Today I sat down and edited the intro of the movie. This is just a draft, any mistakes will be corrected and more will be added.

Coursework- Film Editing (Part 1)

Today during lesson time and after school, I sat down and edited some parts of my film, primarily the intro, and the detectives scene. Here are some snaps of it. With help from my media teacher and a friend, I learned how to use Premier.

One of the logos for a production company. The logo is made by my friends and me a few years back. The original version was yellow and black, but for this Thriller I turned it into a darker string of colors.
